Announcement:

International Course on the Management of the

Dead in Armed Conflicts and Catastrophes

ICRC training centre, Switzerland,

March, 2012

Background of the Course:

The Course is organized in response to needs identified worldwide by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for tailor-made training on the management of the dead in armed conflict and catastrophes. The Course was launched in 2008 by the ICRC jointly with Cameron Forensic Medical Sciences; Barts and The London; School of Medicine and Dentistry (QMUL); University of London. The positive evaluation received from the participants and the growing interest this training has since raised among relevant stakeholders worldwide prompted the organizers to implement two editions of the Course in 2011 (4° and 5° editions) and to invite the Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences as an additional partner for implementation. In 2012 the Course will again be held twice, with the 7° edition taking place in November 2012.

Purpose of the Course:

To offer participants an understanding and practical knowledge of the main aspects related to the management of the dead in armed conflicts and catastrophes, to help ensure their proper and dignified management, including consideration for the needs of bereaved families.

Implementing agencies:

The Course is organized by the ICRC in cooperation with Cameron Forensic Medical Sciences; Barts and The London; School of Medicine and Dentistry (QMUL); University of London and with the Academy of Forensic Medical Sciences.

Target audience:

The course is designed for non-specialists (i.e. with no forensic expertise) from relevant institutions, agencies and organizations worldwide, including armed forces, relevant Governmental agencies, Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, NGOs, etc., who have an overall responsibility in the management of the dead in armed conflicts and catastrophes. However, it does not exclude the participation of forensic practitioners, in particular those interested in the management of the dead in mass fatalities, who will also find the course useful for their practice.

Language and structure of the Course:

The nearly 40-hour-long Course will be held in English, for a maximum of 30 participants. Training will include presentations, practical exercises and group discussions.  Participants will also receive relevant reading material; and those completing the Course will receive a certificate of attendance.
